Two Western Boone High School students returned to school last week, not just as high-schoolers, but also as local celebrities.
Sisters Madeline and Marigrace Kochert are now members of the WNBA Indiana Fever’s Inferno Hip Hop Squad, the official dance team of the Fever. Marigrace is a sophomore; Madeline is a senior.
“It’s incredible to dance with such amazing talent,” Madeline said. “We all push each other, and I love that about this group.”
Members of the dance team range in age from 15 to 25. There are 10 males and 10 females on the team. The team’s dance coach approached the sisters after a Pacemates clinic at the beginning of the year, said their mother, Paula. The girls had also been noticed by several other staff members of the Pacers at half-time performances with their high school dance team, the Western Boone Star Force Dance Crew.
Tryouts for Inferno were in March, and the girls had to wait five long days to hear the news. More than 70 dancers were in attendance at the auditions, Paula said, and the tryouts lasted five hours.
Marigrace said all of the dancers performed a dance, and then they auditioned in small groups. The judges cut 40 dancers in the first round. The remaining dancers went through the routine again, and then they had to wait the five days.
“We were counting down the seconds until the roster went up on the Fever website,” Marigrace said. “We couldn’t believe we made it. It was like a dream.”
