The Boone County Battle of the BBQ hit a fundraising record, raising more than $22,000 Saturday for the Boone County Cancer Society, more than double the inaugural year’s $10,000 in 2008.
The event hit another record this year, with 39 teams competing — the most ever, said organizer Kathy Flannary.
The overall winner of the contest was Swine and Dine, with lead cook Nick Eagle. Swine and Dine also won first place in the sweet barbecue category.
First place for rub went to Christine Table, and Hot ‘N Bothered won first place in the hot-and-spicy category. Boone County Government won first place for beef brisket. Parkwood Health Care Center won best fundraiser, and the Lebanon Fire Department won people’s choice.
“Every year, it just keeps getting bigger,” Flanary said. “This year, we about ran out of food everywhere, and we had fixed more food than ever.”
