---- — The new executive director of the Arc of Greater Boone County, Steve Savage, comes to the job after a long career working with people with disabilities. Savage, of Indianapolis, said his predecessor, Brent Cardin, has done a great job, and the organization is in wonderful shape. “Sometimes it’s easier to follow people who haven’t done well because it makes you look good,” Savage said with a laugh. “But in this case, I’m following someone who has done a great job and is well respected in the community and in the field.” Savage has been working with people with disabilities since the 1970s. After graduating from Indiana University, he first went to work in early childhood education in South Bend. While there, a friend of his who worked at the Arc in St. Joe County asked if he’d be interested in teaching adults basic education skills and how to navigate the bus system. It was a raise, so Savage said yes. “It looked like an interesting job, and I like to teach,” he said. “I went there to teach adults rather than children, and I found I really enjoyed it. That was my first experience working with people with significant disabilities, and it just stuck.” See Wednesday's Times Sentinel for the full story.
