Mayor, state rep spar over business equipment tax

Disagreement between Lebanon Mayor Huck Lewis and State Rep. Tim Brown over the impact Gov. Mike Pence’s proposal to eliminate Indiana’s personal property tax for businesses sharpened Saturday’s legislative breakfast sponsored by the Boone County Chamber of Commerce. About three dozen people attended the 7:30 a.m. event in the community room at Witham Health Services in Lebanon. The exchange between Lewis and Brown came during discussion of the impact the proposal would have on local governments. Brown, R-41, who is chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, had said earlier there were “a lot of misconceptions” about the proposal. Those misconceptions began when Pence used the word “elimination” to describe his proposal to eliminate the tax, which collected about $1 billion annually, Brown said. That concept was softened to “erased” and further smoothed to mean “we do not want anyone unduly harmed,” he said. Some method of tax reform will be necessary, whatever the fate of Pence’s plan, Brown said. See Wednesday's Times Sentinel for the full story.
