Cardin retires from Arc

A lot of things have changed since Brent Cardin started his job as the executive director of the Arc of Greater Boone County in 1991.

The Arc was providing 50 people with services; it now serves around 850 people.

There was 5,000 square feet of space inside the Arc; there is now 30,000 square feet.

But reflecting on his 22 years with the Arc, Cardin's biggest accomplishment is clear -- helping people get to where they want to go in life.

Cardin will retire in March from the Arc. He said it was an accident that he ended up in the not-for-profit world serving people with disabilities. He was a school teacher before -- at a high school in the Fort Wayne area and then at Miami University of Ohio. The Arc position was just a job opportunity, he said.

"But I liked it so well that here I am all these years later," Cardin said. "I never dreamed that I would have a tenure this long. It was a happy accident."
