Head-on crash kills one, injuries two

One woman was killed and a man seriously injured in a head-on crash at 3:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, on Indiana 39 at CR 250 S.

The woman was driving a Dodge 1500 pickup; also in the pickup was a boy, who was rushed to Riley Hospital by Boone County EMS with unknown injuries. The boy, whose age was not available, was in a car seat. He was conscious, but the nature of his injuries was unknown.

The driver of a Kinetico Home Water Systems van was trapped in his work van for about 30 minutes. He appeared to have sustained back and leg injuries, a firefighter said. The van driver was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital by Boone County EMS.

The impact crushed the front of the pickup all the way back to the dashboard.

A wide smear of oil, antifreeze and vehicle parts stretched across Ind. 39 from the pickup, which came to rest partially off the road on the east side of Ind. 39, to the van, which stopped about 3 feet off the pavement to the west.

At press time, the Boone County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was investigating the accident, which shut down Ind. 39 in both directions.

Firefighters from Lebanon and Center Township fire departments were challenged in removing the van driver, not only because of the damage, but because of the difficulty of working in even an undamaged van with rescue tools.

Traffic was detoured at CR 200 S and CR 450 S until Ind.39 was reopened at 6:05 p.m., according to police dispatchers.

It is the second fatal accident in Boone County in the last nine days. An Indianapolis man was struck and killed by a car as he walked north on the Perry Worth Road about a half-mile south of the Boone County Fairgrounds at 11:50 p.m. Oct. 19.
