---- — A successor to Boone County Veterans Service Officer Donnie Campbell will be named in December.

Indiana’s counties all have a veterans service office, according to the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs (www.in.gov/dva/2370.htm). The officers help veterans with applications for state and federal benefits, and other military service-related issues.

Campbell is retiring, effective Dec. 31, after 14 years as the Boone CVSO.

Local CVSOs are appointed by the county’s board of commissioners.

Several people have applied for the position, which requires at least six months of military service and an honorable discharge.

The commissioners will choose three finalists when they meet in executive session on Nov. 18; the finalists will be interviewed at a public meeting. A list of questions will be provided to the finalists, Commissioner Jeff Wolfe said at the board’s Nov. 4 meeting.

Training requirements for CVSOs have been strengthened, Campbell said. Among the requirements is completion of a 32-hour school, as well as a written test, he said. The next school will be in March, he said.
