---- — Property owners in Boone County have until 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, to pay their fall installment of property taxes, County Treasurer Debbie Ottinger said.

The courthouse will be closed on Monday in observation of Veteran’s Day, she added.

Property taxes are billed in spring and fall installments, although payment may be made in full in the spring billing.

Payments may be made with cash, check or money orders, Ottinger said.

Individuals choosing to pay by credit card may go to the county website, www.boonecounty.in.gov, click on the Treasurer’s Office link, and navigate through the instructions to make the payment. The county does not accept American Express, Ottinger said.

“Payments will not be accepted in the office from Nov. 13 through Nov. 22,” she said.

That time is reserved to process and balance all payments made on or before Nov. 12. Because some taxpayers pay by mail, her office needs time to allow those payments to arrive.

“Any payment received after Nov. 12 will have a penalty attached,” Ottinger said.

Penalties for missing the deadline range from 5 percent to 10 percent of the amount due, she said.

“If you’ve never had a penalty and are current and updated, the penalty is 5 percent if you pay within 30 days of Nov. 12,” Ottinger said. “If you have had a late payment, after the 30 days it’s 10 percent.”

Persons who haven’t paid the full amount of the fall bill by the deadline can make a partial payment, which will reduce the penalty.

“For example, if you owe $200, and can only pay $100, the penalty will be based on $100, the amount you still owe,” Ottinger said.

Tax bills were mailed in the spring; anyone who has lost their fall installment can either print a new statement from the website or call the Treasurer’s Office at 765-482-2880.

The office, on the second floor of the Boone County Courthouse in downtown Lebanon, is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
