A Boone County Prosecutor’s Office request to give raises to three deputy prosecutors was approved at the council’s meeting earlier this month, but with some concern by a county councilman.
One deputy prosecutor has “demoted herself” because she is going on maternity leave, and her duties have been reassigned to three other lawyers, Deputy Prosecutor Lori Schein said. The deputy prosecutor will return, but at a much lower salary and with fewer responsibilities, Schein said. New salaries for the three other prosecutors will range from $46,000 to $51,000, she said.
The council approved changing the county’s salary ordinance to reflect the changes.
“I’m really uncomfortable with the idea that salary lines can be reappropriated and adjusted without any input from the county council throughout the year,” Councilman David Rodgers said after the vote. “For me, for the council to have control over budget, we’re going to zero out (the) salary lines.”
Any changes in pay for county employees must be approved by the council, Auditor Deanna Willhoite said. A change in a paycheck does not mean a change in an office’s budget, though.
“You can only move money that was approved,” Willhoite told the council.
