Property tax bills should be in the mail

Property tax bills were scheduled to be mailed by Wednesday, April 23, according to Boone County Treasurer Debbie Ottinger. Bills may be paid in two installments, or all at one time, she said. The deadline for the spring payment is May 12, two days later than usual, because this year May 10 falls on a Saturday. Ottinger said payments sent by mail must be postmarked no later than May 12. Property tax bills also may be paid in person — with cash, check or money order — in the treasurer’s office on the second floor of the Boone County Courthouse in Lebanon. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Credit card payments may only be made online, at www.boonecounty.in.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=173. Anyone who waits until May 12 to send their tax bill should be positive the envelope is postmarked with that date, she said. Late payments will be penalized, based on how late they are. If a property owner is current on their bill and has never before been charged a late fee, the penalty is 5 percent of that installment up to 30 days, Ottinger said. Bills overdue by more than 30 days incur a 10-percent penalty. For information or assistance call 765-482-2880.
