Deadline near for homeowners to file for credit

Form must be completed to verify eligibility

Zionsville — Property owners have just under three weeks to file paperwork that could save them thousands of dollars on their tax bills.

A homestead verification form, on pink or rose-colored paper, was mailed with property tax bills in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and must be completed at least once prior to the deadline of Jan. 1, 2013. “Completing the form confirms that the individual is using the property as his or her permanent home, an eligibility requirement of the deduction,” Brian Bailey, commissioner of the Department of Local Government Finance, said.

As early as January 2013, county auditors will begin sending out letters to any taxpayer receiving the homestead deduction who had not filed the homestead verification form on or before Dec. 31, 2012. These will be notifications that the taxpayer’s homestead deduction is subject to termination.
