Whitestown’s 2013 budget has been cut by more than $420,000.
That’s a 12 percent reduction in the town’s general fund, said Town Manager Tom Combiths.
If it had been cut from the 2012 budget, it would represent a 14 percent reduction, based on general fund expenses through Dec. 31, he said.
The reductions, approved by the town council on Tuesday, Feb. 12, were required because the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance approved less money than Whitestown had asked for in its submitted budget.
The town had submitted a total 2013 budget of $2,343,525 for review and approval by the DLGF, according to the Indiana Gateway for Government Units website. That was just more that $498,000 higher than the town’s 2012 overall budget.
“We’re adopting this so we’re working off a balanced budget for 2013,” Councilwoman Susan Austin said before a resolution approving the reduced budget was adopted 4-0.
Eliminated was $319,000 in a motor vehicle and highway account that would have been used as matching grant funding; $41,224 for a memorandum of understanding with Duke Realty Investments, and $60,000 in machinery and equipment expenses.
The grant matching funds had not been committed to a project but were for future use, Austin said. By cutting the grant, the town’s total motor vehicle budget for this year drops to $1.23 million.
