Toy drive begins early after flood ruins gifts

Lebanon — For many Boone County children, Christmas begins in May this year.

For years, the Lebanon Fire Department has been a collection sites for the Boone County Toy Drive, which last year provided toys and other items to about 1,000 local children.

One of the worst floods in Lebanon’s history, however, destroyed $15,000 to $20,000 in toys, books and games that were being stored by toy drive chairwoman Myrtle Bailey at her home on Fordice Street. Bailey said she discovered the loss when she checked her basement after heavy rains forced Prairie Creek out of its banks and into dozens of homes throughout Lebanon April 18 and 19.

“It made me sick,” Bailey said.

Boone County Resource Recovery donated services to properly dispose of the waste, said LFD Chief Jason Lee.

“Off-duty Lebanon firefighters loaned trucks and a trailer to haul away the ruined toys,” he said.

Now, the Lebanon Fire Department will begin collecting toy drive contributions at both its stations, Lee said.
