Thousands turn out for rodeo

Lebanon — Some 3,000 spectators turned out last weekend to witness events during the annual Indiana High School Rodeo Association Rodeo Bash at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

Brent Cardin, executive director of The Arc of Greater Boone County, said the turnout and the weather were great for the rodeo, held Saturday night, June 8, and Sunday afternoon, June 9.

The Arc, which provides opportunities for people with disabilities, and IHSRA have worked together to put on the annual event for the past four years.

About 100 participants from around the state competed in events like goat tying, barrel racing, roping, steer wrestling and bull riding. Five local youths — Cord and Strand Barricklow, Katie George, Brayton Dewees and Elizabeth McClain — were among the competitors.

Cardin said the Boone County Convention and Visitors Bureau has helped promote the rodeo, and Hachette Book Group for the second straight year signed on as a platinum sponsor.

“They have greatly helped us put this on. It’s not inexpensive,” Cardin said.
