Whitestown town council begins revitalization plan

Whitestown — The Whitestown Town Council took the next step in revitalizing the historic downtown area.

The council approved during its meeting Tuesday night, April 9, the purchase of the old high school building, 345 S. Bowers St., and demolition of the old police station and another vacant building. The town purchased the vacant building at 1 E. Pierce St. during an August meeting with the intention of tearing it down.

Town attorney Steve Unger said the cost to buy the old high school is $255,000 and would be paid for by Whitestown Municipal Utilities. The town would pay back the utility through 10-year loan at 5-percent interest.

Councilwoman Julie Whitman asked how the 5-percent interest rate was determined.

“That was the same rate that we applied for the Cozy Lane purchase,” Unger said. “We certainly can lower it, but that was what we used on the Cozy Lane property.”

Eventually, the building will be used for town services such as police, fire, clerk-treasurer and other administrative functions.

An estimate by GRW Engineering said to fully renovate the building would cost $3 million.
