Eight vote center locations will be established in Boone County for the November general election, with a ninth site to open exclusively on Election Day.
The Boone County Election Board unanimously approved the plan after a 2.5-hour meeting Friday, Jan. 24, Boone County Clerk Penny Bogan said.
"I feel good about this," she said. "I want it to happen."
But Bogan wants to be prudent as well; that's why she urged the election board to defer the conversion until November.
Voters in the county's 53 precincts will go to 23 locations for the May primary, signing in with the ponderous, handwritten poll books that have been used for decades.
In November those handwritten volumes will be replaced by electronic poll books, so Bogan wants to learn from the experiences of other counties before choosing the "epoll" book Boone County will use.
