The Arc of Greater Boone County is celebrating Disability Awareness Month in March with the Arc Artisans Art Show and Reception, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, March 8, at the Sugar Creek Art Center in Thorntown. The event features an art show and sale, a silent auction, and jazz by musicians Tony Artis and Lester Stansberry. A meal will be available for purchase from Poe’s Country Garden Caterers. Call Marcia Clutter at The Arc of Greater Boone County at 765-482-6815 or visit www.thearcgbc.org or the Arc Artisans page on Facebook for more information.
The Arc is also encouraging elementary and middle schools in the county to participate by reading children a book or short story or showing a video that relates to the theme of Disability Awareness Month. The Arc also encourages the Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign, sponsored by Special Olympics and Best Buddies. At www.r-word.org, individuals can take a pledge to end the use of the “R” word, and download videos, information, resources, materials and ideas for conducting age-appropriate awareness activities. This campaign’s annual day of awareness is the first Wednesday of every March.
The Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities offers an abundance of resources and activities helping to develop positive attitudes about and behaviors toward people with disabilities. The 2013 Disability Awareness Month campaign is entitled “Community Connections.” Visit www.IndianaDisabilityAwareness.org for more campaign events.
Arc has offices in Lebanon and at 240 S. First St. in Zionsville.
