Farmers’ market returns to Lebanon

Lebanon — Two years ago when Lebanon’s farmers’ market ceased, Bethany Deaton said she kept hearing people use one thing as a reason — “Well, we’re not Zionsville.”

“No, we’re not, and that’s OK,” said Bethany, who owns The Fig Tree Cafe with her husband, Levi. “We can still do our own thing, and it can be good.”

The local farmers’ market ended in 2011 when its sponsor, Lebanon Vitalization Inc., dissolved. But Lebanon Parks Director John Messenger saw a need for it, so the Lebanon Parks Department is starting it back up again at Lebanon Memorial Park, near Herr Cabin. It will be near a playground so kids can play while the adults shop. Levi Deaton said he’s a fan of the location change because it creates a more family friendly feel.

The first farmers’ market of the season will be June 20. The market will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evenings instead of Saturday mornings this time around to avoid competing with farmers’ markets in other communities. It will run into October.
