Zionsville — Freedom Church in Lebanon played host to a chili cook-off earlier this month to raise funds for the church’s Operation Freedom Cares project, through which care package are sent to local men and women serving overseas in the military.

“We need to raise funds to send care packages to troops,” said Organizer Ursula Spear. “Postage costs an arm and a leg!”

Spear’s husband spent 21 years in the military and her son is in the U.S. Air Force.

Spear is collecting names and addresses of local soldiers deployed this holiday season to receive care packages from the community. Contact Spear at 765-485-2387, or Freedom Church at 482-7220, to provide names of soldiers or to find out ways to contribute.

Items for the care packages are being collected through Nov. 28 at Thorntown Library, Lebanon American Legion Post No. 113 and at Freedom Church.
