Coffee roaster wants to brew up a cup of success

— Darrin Marion, a Traders Point resident, says he has the best job — roasting coffee.

Marion began his love for roasting as a coffeemaster at Starbucks. He attended a program through Starbucks that helped him learn about the coffee roasting process and different flavors from all over the world. He is also a barista at his church, Lakeview Christian Church in Indianapolis.

Marion wanted to try his hand at making his own blends and turned to the internet for help.

“I looked online and ordered a few pounds,” he said. “I didn’t have enough money to purchase an expensive coffee roaster so I started using a cast iron skillet and a whisk.”

Marion went on to roasting coffee in a popcorn maker and a thermometer.

“I started getting good at it,” Marion said. “I decided to let some of my regular customers at Starbucks try my blends and they ended up loving it and wanted to know where they could buy it.”

Marion took advice from his customers and started Darrin’s Coffee Co. in May 2011.

“I wanted to do something to make someone smile,” he said. “Coffee makes people happy. It’s how they start their day.”
