Once a New York City chef, Steve Smith has brought his talents in the kitchen to the new Victorian House Dining restaurant in Sheridan.
The restaurant, at 4160 West 176th St., was once a pizza place. It has been the Victorian House for some time, Smith said, because when he recently leased it, he had to keep the same name. But the food is totally different.
The fare is American food, Smith said, what he called comfort food with a flare. Daily specials will be things like meatball sandwiches, turkey or salmon.
“We’re trying to keep it interesting for the customers,” he said. “When I go out to eat, this is the kind of food I like to get.”
Smith is originally from New Jersey, and he went to school in Manhattan. He worked at a few restaurants in the area, serving as an executive chef at one, before his cousin acquired a restaurant in upstate New York. Smith worked there for 20 years as manager and chef.
He later started talking online with a girl he went to high school with, Jean Kocher, who is now his fiancée.
“I took a trip out here to Indy, and the next thing I know, I moved here,” Smith said. “So this is my first restaurant in the Indy area.”
