A new Mrs. Boone County was crowned Saturday, June 21, at the 56th annual pageant held at the Theatre at the Milk Building. Anita Bowen, executive director of Boone County Senior Services, was given this honor this year.
Bowen was sponsored by Centenary United Methodist Church. She was crowned by the 2013 queen, Angela Hensell, and given a bouquet of flowers by her husband, Bob.
Bowen shared about a special family tradition during the question portion of the pageant. Each winter, she said, her family takes a trip to an Indiana state park. It started with her grandparents.
"The memories have been what's most important," she said. "It made our family stronger and helped us through some difficult times."
The secret question at this year's pageant, the question the contestants do not hear until they are on stage, was: "How would you describe Boone County to someone to make them want to move here?" Bowen said it is a remarkable place.
"It's a small town with big values," she said. "We stand together in dark times and when on top of the mountain. We celebrate so much. We bring people together."
