Construction of upscale apartment complex begins

Construction of a new 182-unit apartment complex in the Zionsville/Whitestown area is under way.

The complex, known as Westhaven, is being built by the Gene B. Glick Company of Indianapolis. It will be located off of Ind. 334 near County Road 700 East, next to the Stonegate subdivision, and will include nine buildings plus a community center on 14.55 acres.

It will have a Zionsville address, but is technically located in Whitestown. Any children who move into the complex will attend Zionsville Community Schools.

It is the first time Glick has done a project in Boone County. The complex was given approval by the Boone County Area Plan Commission in June, according to Mike Andreoli, the attorney who represented Glick.

Some voluntary commitments were made by Glick in order to get the project done, according to Andreoli and Rachel Whittington, the Boone County Area Plan Commission executive director.

Andreoli said that all of the parking and roadways in the complex will be in the interior. An emergency entrance will be built off County Road 700 East, and a sidewalk will be constructed to connect with the sidewalks from Stonegate.

“We want it so the kids won’t have to get out onto 334,” Andreoli said.

Whittington said the builders also agreed to use brick as a primary building material.

“It is very tightly done in terms of voluntary commitments by Glick,” Whittington said.

According to Jodi Wright, director of communications for Glick, the units are scheduled to be available for rent in April 2010.

The average unit size will be 1,050 square feet. Studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units will be available. Open concept kitchens and solariums are also available. Parking will be restricted to the interior of the complex in the back of the buildings. The exterior will consist mostly of brick and HardiPlank, a wood-like fiber-cement siding.

“We chose Zionsville because we believe the I-65 corridor in Boone County will be the next major growth area in central Indiana,” said David Barrett, president and CEO of Glick. “We’ve got a wonderful location next to the Stonegate community and to several Zionsville schools. With easy access to I-65, we think this is a highly desirable location that will be well received by those looking for everything Zionsville has to offer.”

Town government officials for Whitestown said they like what they have seen relating to the project.

“From the mockups we’ve seen, it’s a really nice development,” said Susan Austin, Whitestown Town Council member. “It makes a good transition from the residential area at Stonegate and the retail part of Anson.”
