U.S. 421 closed down for wreck

Life-line helicopter lands on highway

By Ben Woodson/Times Sentinel writer

An accident closed down U.S. 421 for at least two hours Monday afternoon, Oct. 22, with a PHI helicopter landing on the highway just north of County Road 300 South.

A semi-truck heading north on U.S. 42,1 just north of C.R. 300, crossed over the center line and struck a Chevrolet Trailblazer head on at about 12:30 p.m. Zionsville firefighters used saws and the “jaws of life” to take the roof off the car and remove the driver of the Trailblazer, Mark Heinzman, 46, of Fishers.

He was taken to Methodist Hospital on a PHI helicopter, but Boone County Sheriff’s Deputy John Ford said his only injuries were to his legs and they were not life-threatening. There were no passengers in Heinzman’s car.

Semi-truck driver Brandon Coyle, 25, of Indianapolis, did not notice in time that northbound traffic was slowing on U.S. 421 and he could not stop. He attempted to avoid a pick-up truck In front of him and veered left. Coyle clipped the pick-up truck and struck Heinzman’s vehicle in the southbound lane head on.

The drivers and passengers of the semi- and pick-up trucks were uninjured, Ford said.
