Commissioners approve 96th Street speed limit

An ordinance setting a 35 mph speed limit on 96th Street and Ford Road was approved Monday, Nov. 16, by the Boone County Commissioners.

The ordinance, based on a traffic survey by J. A. Barker Engineering, brings the speed limit into line with an ordinance recently passed by the Zionsville Town Council.

Both the town and county had to approve identical limits because part of the area is outside Zionsville’s limits, but will come under the town’s jurisdiction Jan. 1 after a government consolidation with Eagle and Union townships.

The traffic study served two purposes. It’s also a required step before Boone County can replace a concrete bridge over Eagle Creek with a used steel truss bridge purchased from Shelbyville.

The bridge can’t be used, though, unless the area around 96th Street and Ford Road is declared a historic preservation district.

County Councilman Gene Thompson, whose district includes the Zionsville area, asked the commissioners if there was a time line for replacement of the concrete bridge.

“About a decade, I think,” replied Commissioner Charles Eaton.
