Zionsville — Work has officially begun on a new 300,000-square-foot FedEx Ground distribution center in Zionsville.

Several FedEx and Zionsville representatives took part in a ground-breaking ceremony Wednesday morning, May 29. The facility is scheduled to open in August 2014 with nearly 100 employees but will grow to 200 employees, many of whom will be relocated from another Indianapolis facility that will remain open.

The facility will be located in the Ripberger Business Park, which sits on the south side of old 106th Street between Michigan and Zionsville roads and is bisected by Bennett Parkway. FedEx received development approval during a September plan commission meeting.

“We are so glad to be here in this community,” said Scott Burns, FedEx Ground regional vice president. “We are excited about the growing opportunity in the greater Indianapolis area.”

Burns said this project will be on the biggest parcel for an automated station for FedEx.

“We are here in the heart of the country and in the heart of our system,” he said. “We see the growth potential in Indianapolis and want to be part of that.”

Burns said the Zionsville project is part of a larger FedEx initiative to grow, expand and relocate 500 facilities throughout the next five years.

“We are already thinking of other parcels in the area,” he said. “We think you will be amazed at what you will see in August with this facility.”
