School makeup days in planning stages

Zionsville Community Schools Superintendent Scott Robison told the ZCS Board of Trustees at its last meeting that a plan is being formulated to make up school days missed because of inclement weather this winter, and that finalized plan will be brought before the board for discussion and approval at its Feb. 24 meeting. The plan also must be approved by the Indiana Department of Education. Glenda Ritz, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, announced acceptable options on Thursday, Feb. 13, that will allow corporations some flexibility in the way they make up snow days. “As Hoosiers, we always expect harsh winter weather,” Ritz said. “However, this year’s storms have been extreme and have interrupted instruction for schools throughout the state. I have spoken with countless superintendents throughout the state, and they have all asked for more flexibility for scheduling instructional time. I have heard their concerns, and I am happy to make these options available to our schools.” Schools have the flexibility to change their calendar by re-scheduling holidays, pre-established snow flex days or professional development days without requesting a waiver from the DOE, Ritz said. They also may have school on Saturdays or add days to the end of the school calendar. See Wednesday's Times Sentinel for the full story.
