Anson sees more development activity

---- — Anson has seen a lot of activity in the past year, most notably Meijer breaking ground, but three new developments may be happening soon as well.

The Whitestown Plan Commission has approved the plans for a Huntington Bank location, Goodwill store and apartment complex all near the Anson area.

Whitestown Planner Deb Luzier said there are several factors contributing to the surge in development activity in Whitestown.“Current projects such as the Meijer store have attracted a lot of attention from developers,” she said. “Anson has an effective marketing strategy to attract quality development to the area; Whitestown has a strong base for development with areas designated for all types of land uses such as commercial, industrial and different types of residential uses for all lifestyles.”While Huntington Bank has a location on the northeast corner of Whitestown Parkway and South Main Street, Brent Wilder, Huntington communications manager, said there are no plans to develop a location.“We closed to purchase a lot,” he said. “We don’t have any immediate plans to develop a location on the site, but we have it banked for future plans for a branch location.”Wilder said nothing was holding them back from developing the site, but their “intent was to purchase the site while it was available.”Cindy L. Graham, Goodwill Indianapolis vice president of marketing, said she wasn’t sure when the Goodwill store would open at its location, 6065 S. Main St.

Graham said there were two major factors as to why the site in Anson was chosen. She said the site, 2.75 acres just west of Meijer, will hold a 16,000-square-foot facility, which includes space for both a sales floor and processing area.“One of the things we look at as it relates to the expansion of locations is residential growth, because that is an opportunity for us because where there are people, there are donations,” she said. “The second part is where retail dollars are being expanded — where other stores are locating. A lot of people don’t think of us as competition for retail dollars, but in the marketplace, we are.”Graham said the store would employ around 30 people, and they hope to open in very early summer 2014.“We always look at residential growth for donations and, despite the economy, this area has still been growing,” she said. “That’s why it’s been an attractive area and on our radar screen for a while.”Graham said it is important for people to understand that Goodwill is more than a place to find bargains.“When people donate and shop at Goodwill, all that money goes to support our mission to provide work training and education,” she said. “It’s a great place for bargains, but your money goes to a very good cause.”The apartment complex will be known as Watermark-Stonegate Apartments, according to documents filed with the planning department.

The 200-unit complex will be located on 19 acres on the south side of Whitestown Parkway, east of CR 700 E.

Watermark Residential will develop the complex. Representatives from Watermark did not return phone calls as of press time. According to its website, Watermark Residential was established in 2008 and “has emerged as a national leader in the development and construction of upscale multifamily communities.”Other communities Watermark has developed include Watermark on Cumberland in Fishers and Sycamore Terrace in Terre Haute.
