Friendly Tavern owner cancels chili cook off

One restaurant’s local fall tradition won’t be around this year.

Scott Barnes, owner of The Friendly Tavern, said he will not offer the annual chili cook off competition this year due to state fire regulations.

“The regulations require us to change to where we just couldn’t do it,” he said. “There is not a good way to have the event without a great expense for everyone involved.”

Barnes said the rules mandate contestants to have a fire-safe tent, which can cost up to $150. All tents also have to be tied down to the ground with a 40-pound weight on top of each corner.
