Not a typical Labor Day

Zionsville Police Officer Adam Harper was certainly not expecting a busy day on Labor Day, his first day back after his wife had their child six days earlier.

Harper was called on an assist medics run shortly after 7 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2. A few quick minutes later, the officer was the one who delivered Emily Maria Schlifke, the daughter of Peter and Sarah Schlifke.

"I knew there would be a little delay before the medics got there," Harper said. "As soon as I got to the door, I knew there wouldn't be enough time; so, I had to kind of take over."

Sarah said she panicked when she went into labor and wasn't able to make it to the car before the baby started to come.

"As soon as I heard the sirens, there was just a wave of relief," she said. "Once he came through the door, I felt so much better. He was so confident and relaxed."

Harper said he wasn't too nervous about delivering the child.

"I tend to not get too worked up," he said. "It's kind of surreal when it's your own child being born, and you can't believe everything is happening. When it's not your own, you are removed a little bit; so, I just stepped in."

Sarah said she and her husband were very thankful Harper showed up when he did.

"It meant so much to us for him to be there," he said. "We were very impressed because he handled everything so well; we are just so blessed he came into the house."

For Harper, it was not the typical uneventful Labor Day.

"It was really cool to be a part of," he said. "Those are the calls that you like to get where you really feel like you are helping people out. I was just lucky to be a part of it. I definitely feel a connection to the girl and the family, and I'm glad everything worked out for the best."
