Humane Society wins online contest, $1000 grant

The Humane Society for Boone County came out on top in an online battle held by the Community Foundation of Boone County. With 497 Facebook "likes," the not-for-profit organization won a $1,000 grant from the foundation.

The community foundation began the contest in late December. Fifteen local not-for-profit organizations submitted a photo and a story summarizing why they should receive the grant, and the foundation posted them all on their Facebook page. The photo with the most "likes" by Jan. 5 was to be the winner.

In second place was 91.9 FM WITT with 429 "likes," and the Zionsville Education Foundation was third with 238 "likes." There were 1,931 votes cast for the 15 organizations.

The Humane Society came out in front early, but Board President Mike Hancock said he saw their lead slip for a little while to 91.9 FM WITT.

"I think just about everyone on the board has been following along on the page, watching the votes," he said. "We saw a couple days ago we were down, so we reached out to a bigger audience."

Hancock said board members asked people involved with dog rescue organizations in Indianapolis to get online and "like" them. Each person can only vote, or "like" a photo, once, so the organizations had to share their photos and information to get the word out to more people. In that way, it was as much an awareness campaign than it was a contest, said Jen Pendleton, executive director of the community foundation.
