Council elects new leadership duo

— As the calendar turned to 2013, the Zionsville Town Council gavel also turned over to a new hand.

The council elected Jeff Papa as president and Steve Mundy as vice president during its meeting Monday night, Jan. 7. Tim Haak served as the president in 2012 with Papa as vice president.

Papa said electing new leaders each year was a goal of the council.

“In general, a lot of times you see the same officers go for an entire term,” he said. “When we were all elected, we had a discussion about that and wanted to rotate leadership positions around to give people a different experience.”

Haak said he felt it was important to change leadership within the council.

“It’s important that everybody gets a chance to be in that role that wants to,” Haak said. “Plus, I think you can get new ideas generated, and it makes for a healthier council.”

Mundy also felt that changing leadership would bring out the best in the council.

“(Changing leadership) allows a different set of leadership with different ideas,” he said. “I don’t think that any one of us has the best ideas; so this gives us the opportunity to maximize the talent on the council by allowing there to be some change in leadership year to year. It offers the possibility of capturing talent, ideas and skills of the council to a greater extent.”

Papa praised the work done in the previous year by his predecessor.

“(Haak) did an outstanding job,” he said. “He really did a great job of leading us and put in a lot of hours that a lot of people don’t realize.”
