Town council approves fee changes, introduces budget

Zionsville — The numbers of building permits being issued is soaring this year. The Zionsville Department of Planning and Economic Development plans to add a new building inspector to meet the ever-increasing demand.

The town council unanimously approved an ordinance to amend the schedule of fees the department charges for issuing permits to fund the additional employee.

Wayne DeLong, director of planning and economic development, said the root of the ordinance came from budget work sessions.

“We are hoping to increase the fees to compensate for hiring an additional building inspector for 2014 and beyond,” he said.

Council President Jeff Papa asked if the new rates would be comparable to surrounding communities.

“They certainly are,” DeLong said. “Under the proposed changes, for a 2,500 square-feet home, the fee would be $1,000, which is an increase from the $925 fee for 2013. In Carmel, that same permit would be $1,106; $1,350 in Fishers; and $2,650 in Whitestown.”

Councilman Tom Schuler asked DeLong if the level of activity in his office was high.

“We are ahead 30 permits from last year already,” DeLong said. “We feel that next year we are going to have another jump. We issued more than 800 this year; Fishers issued around 500; and Westfield issued around 400. So, we certainly have seen a lot of activity.”
