Council looks at roundabouts for busy intersection

Zionsville — Zionsville may steal a page from the play book of its neighbor to the east and add a roundabout intersection.

The town council discussed making the intersection of Ford Road and Bloor Lane into a roundabout to alleviate traffic issues in the area during its meeting Monday morning, Dec. 17. Carmel now has 60 roundabouts, more than any other city in the United States, according to the city’s website.

Council President Tim Haak said discussions began last year to find a solution for the intersection along with the intersection of Ford and Cruse roads.

“As far as an intersection that has consistent trouble, this is the No. 1 intersection in the town,” said Lance Lantz, superintendent of the Zionsville Street and Stormwater Department. “We looked at some different solutions, and we felt that a roundabout was the best case scenario.”

Lantz said he has received quotes from Beam, Longest and Neff and American Structurepoint.

“Options for construction range from $640,000 to $1.6 million,” he said. “It depends on all of the different bells and whistles and configurations. One option we looked at was a double roundabout. We will certainly have more conversations and discussions as to what we want in that area.”
