Remembering Fallen Heroes

Zionsville — Bob Musgrave, American Legion Riders road captain, places an American flag near a grave Thursday, May 23, at Zionsville Cemetery. Musgrave was joined by members of the Zionsville Police Department and American Legion in putting flags on the grave sites of veterans.

“My dad (Charles) was a World War II veteran, and I want to remember him and all veterans (Memorial Day) weekend,” Musgrave said. “I never got the opportunity to serve, but this is my way to pay honor to those who gave their lives.”

Rick Baum, post service officer for American Legion Post No. 79, said the Legion has been placing flags for several years.

“Every veteran took an oath to defend our flag, the American flag,” he said. “All gave some, and some gave all. We vow that we will never forget, and this is a way to honor those who have gone before us. It’s a way of showing honor and tribute for all those who served. We have a saying that freedom is not free. Seeing the flags out here is an ongoing reminder that we are a free country because of all those who sacrificed their lives.”
