School board approves technology purchases

The Zionsville Community Schools Board of School Trustees, at its regular meeting Monday, Sept. 9, approved the purchase of three new routers to replace routers that are at the end of their lives. The board made the decision after hearing from chief technology officer Patti Bostwick that much of the corporation’s technology equipment is no longer supported by the maintenance agreements because parts are no longer manufactured for the outdated pieces. “We’re having issues because of the age of the equipment,” she said. “It wasn’t built to do what we ask it to do now.” Bostwick said the schools have experienced failures and slow-downs of the core router, and two other, slightly older routers are also worn out. She said more information is pushed through the system than it was built to handle, and the lives of the routers have been extended as much as possible. The information technology staff is concerned, because a catastrophic failure would halt school business. The board heard a full technology report from Bostwick and, later in the meeting, voted to replace the routers. Through the state’s quantity purchasing agreement, which replaces the bidding process, the district will receive the lowest price available: $186,146.50. That money will come from the Capital Projects Fund, according to Bostwick. See Wednesday's Times Sentinel for the full story.
