Library receives sculpture

Sculpture dedicated in honor of longtime executive director

Staff report

— The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library honored Martha Catt, former executive director of the library, with a sculpture Sunday, April 15. Catt was the first director when the library became a public library. She served as director for 20 years from 1990 to 2010. The sculpture features a boy and girl reading, with the declaration,  “Dedicated to children of all ages who love learning.” The sculpture was funded entirely by private gifts. Catt received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indiana Library Federation after her retirement in 2010.

“It’s a beautiful sculpture and a lot of love went into planning and executing it,” Catt said. “It was a surprise and what a lovely thing to do for me and the community, and everyone gets to enjoy it now.”

Catt now spends her time helping small and medium-sized libraries with strategic planning and volunteering with Love Inc.
