Little League opening postponed

Zionsville — Zionsville Little League Board of Directors has announced that, with Lions Park under 8 to 10 feet of water Friday morning, April 19, Friday’s and Saturday’s opening ceremonies have been postponed.

A memo to ZLL families states: “As a result of the flooding, we are postponing all Little League activities at Lions’ Park indefinitely. No practices or games until further notice.

“Until we can safely get into the park to assess the damage, it is impossible to even guess how long the cleaning and restoration process will take. When the water levels have subsided and we can access the park with local officials, we’ll have a better understanding of the damage and what it will take to resume playing baseball and softball again.”

The memo also states that the traditional opening night ceremonies will be held eventually to demonstrate to the nearly 800 ZLL participants that the community is strong and can respond to setbacks such as the flooding.

The ZLL board also hopes to show the youth that when disaster strikes everyone helps out. They’re asking families to assist with cleanup and restoration in whatever way they can.

“The core strength of our league is the volunteerism of our families, and we will need to call on that strength in the coming days,” the memo says.

Photos, uniform pick-up and a fund-raising campaign also have been pushed back. Families will be notified of changes via electronic media.
