Lightning causes fire at ZCHS

Zionsville — A lightning strike caused as much as $200,000 in damage to a building near the Zionsville Community High School football field, according to a Zionsville Fire Department press release.

The release states ZFD was dispatched to the “Team Building” near the football stadium shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday, April 17. Firefighters saw fire coming through the roof of the building and extinguished it by 5:20 a.m.

Mike Shafer, Zionsville Community Schools chief financial officer, said the deductible for the insurance policy is $10,000. Shafer said the corporation budgets around $500,000 for events such as this one.

“It’s a standard practice with many school corporations because there are a number of unforeseen contingencies that can occur,” he said. “We do put it in there and hope that we don’t have to spend it.”

Greg Schellhase, ZCHS athletic director, said the team room is used for watching film and team meetings.

“The fire damage in that room is not too bad,” he said. “It was pretty well contained in the attic of that room. There’s a lot of water damage, which will take a while to repair and restore.”
