— A joint meeting provided many answers for the Zionsville Town Council about the proposed stormwater utility fee.

The council met about the proposed fee with the Stormwater Utility Board, the Citizen’s Advisory Committee and representatives from Boone County for more than three hours Thursday, Nov. 29.

The fee would charge $3.86 per residence in Zionsville. For parcels that are not residences such as farms, industrial or commercial uses, $3.86 will be charged per 4,400 square feet of impervious surface such as rooftops, parking lots or other hard surfaces.

Money raised from the fee would go to the Stormwater Department, which is paid for now from the Streets Department and Motor Vehicle Highway fund. The budget will be used to ensure the town meets certain requirements set forth by the Clean Water Act for water quality purposes. Some of those requirements are public outreach and education, purchasing equipment and maintenance of storm drains.

The groups discussed many topics including the difference between the stormwater fee and Boone County’s ditch fee.
