Town urged to talk early with county on bridge

Zionsville — A Boone County Councilman said now is the time for the Zionsville Town Council to talk to the county about replacing the Ford Road bridge.

Gene Thompson told the council during its Monday night, April 8, meeting to speak with County Commissioners President Jeff Wolfe and County Highway Superintendent Rick Carney about the proposed bridge project.

“I would encourage Zionsville to engage the commissioner and highway superintendent to be sure that all of your needs are met,” Thompson said. “You should be thinking about traffic patterns, as well as any trails and pathways because this would be the time to include those things.”

Councilwoman Susana Suarez asked Thompson if the county was still at risk for losing federal funding for the bridge.

“The policy was that if (the Indiana Department of Transportation) has allocated money and the project was not out to bid within two years, the funding is pulled,” Thompson said. “In February, we set aside $500,000 from the Cumulative Bridge Fund, which was the amount our highway superintendent felt would be sufficient to cover any matching grant money. Now we have to re-design the bridge to get back in line, so to speak.”

Suarez asked Thompson what his recommendation was for the council moving forward.

“I think the more dialogue you have prior to putting pencil to paper, the better the design will be,” he said. “I think the best result is going to come from the thought process now, early in the process.”
