Local Domers enjoy an Irish revival with trip to title game

Family with strong Notre Dame ties relishes football team’s time in spotlight.

As crimson and white confetti fell over him, one Zionsville man couldn’t help but remember everything that lead him down to South Beach.

Anthony Meyer, a lifelong University of Notre Dame football fan, was one of thousands of fans who made the trip to Miami for the BCS National Championship Game against the University of Alabama earlier this month. Alabama won the game 42-14 to win the title.

The Meyer family is not a typical family when it comes to its Fighting Irish fandom. Anthony has a niece named Ara, after the famed Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian, one nephew named Rockne, after the legendary Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne and another nephew, Lou Leahy, a combination of two other Notre Dame football coaching greats, Lou Holtz and Frank Leahy.

“I’ve had 17 family members go to Notre Dame,” Anthony said. “I always say that I was too smart for Notre Dame, and that if I hadn’t gotten into Ball State, I would have gone there. This was actually the first time in a very long time where we didn’t have someone there.”

Meyer said his family has had season tickets to Notre Dame for as long as he could remember, and his first game was in 1980 when Notre Dame beat Michigan on a last second 51 yard field goal by Harry Oliver.

“I’ve been to at least one game every year since then,” he said. “This was my first time ever traveling for a bowl game, not that there’s been a lot of opportunities recently.”
