Ellspermann joins GOP celebration

Zionsville — Indiana Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann celebrated Valentine’s Day at the Witham Health Services Pavilion in Lebanon with 250 fellow Republicans at the Boone County Republican Central Committee 2013 Lincoln Day Dinner.

“You set a very high bar about how you feel about the Republican Party,” Ellspermann joked.

Ellspermann actually was celebrating an anniversary at the Valentine’s Day gathering — she had been sworn into office exactly one month earlier.

She said the inauguration was a fabulous event, but that the activities of that evening and the first few days were a blur.

It took several more days for it to sink in that she was indeed serving Indiana in the state’s second-highest position.

“The first Friday afternoon as I was leaving the Statehouse, I looked back and thought ‘I think I just finished my first week as lieutenant governor!’ she said.

Ellspermann said the best surprise of the first month has been the quality of the people who serve Indiana as state employees. She said the first month also gave her confirmation that campaigning to serve with Mike Pence was the right choice.

She knew Pence would be a good governor, she said “but he’s better than we would have ever guessed.”

Ellspermann talked about job creation, education, and  agricultural and defense-industry related growth in the state and said she, the governor and other Republicans hoped to get work done despite the pervasive partisanship in politics.
