Though 16 percent of Zionsville students experienced disruptions while taking the online ISTEP-plus tests last spring, the Indiana Department of Education announced Monday, July 29, that the testing issues did not have a significant negative impact on the students’ scores statewide.
Students in corporations statewide experienced issues while attempting to take the ISTEP tests online in late April and early May. ISTEP is for students in grades 3 to 8, and this was the first year all students were required to test online. Testing proctor CTB McGraw-Hill administered the test and worked on the issues for several days, as problems persisted during the tumultuous testing week. Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz hired Dr. Richard Hill of the National Center for the Improvement of Educational Assessment to review the test results.
The IDOE says the report shows the test results weren’t measureable because teachers, administrators, students, parents and Ritz acted quickly once they knew there were problems.
The report shows 32 percent, or 487 students at Lebanon Community School Corp. experienced disruptions while testing, 16 percent, or 436 students at Zionsville Community Schools ; 3 percent, or 19 students at Western Boone Community School Corp.; and
Statewide, corporations ranged from 1 percent of students interrupted, at Hamilton Community Schools in northern Indiana, to 50 percent, in Vincennes.
Bob Bostwick, ZCS director of operations, said the district will wait until they receive individual results in the fall before determining if there was an impact on students.
“The fact that we don’t have the individual student scores, we can’t make any determination,” he said.
