The Town of Whitestown is proceeding with a project to install a crosswalk at Whitestown Parkway and County Road 700 East, providing a safe way for students at Zionsville West Middle School to cross the street.
Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said the town hopes to begin construction this week to have the crosswalk installed before the end of the school year.
The project started after a group of ZWMS eighth-graders, Theresa Bottorff, Kelsey Merril, Charlize Roe and Amelia Wilkie, pitched the idea to both Zionsville and Whitestown. The students said 174 ZWMS students live in Royal Run and cannot walk to school, the Boys and Girls Club or other nearby businesses.
Norton said the town will install a high-intensity, lighted crosswalk across Whitestown Parkway and a path to Morton Street with another crosswalk to cross 700 E to the existing pathway system that leads to the school. He said Calumet was awarded the project with a bid of near $120,000.
