Whitestown residents may soon notice a small increase in their water bills.
The town council will hold a public hearing and consider adopting an ordinance amending and restating the rates and charges for water during its Tuesday night, June 11, meeting. The overall increase will be around 3 percent.
Town Councilwoman Susan Austin said the council looked at adjusting the rate to help fund improvements to the water infrastructure throughout town. She said state statute mandates town-owned utility companies to not be a money-maker and can only operate with just enough extra money generated in case something happens that needs to be replaced.
“It’s good practice to do rate studies periodically,” she said. “We are working on a second connection to (Citizens) water, which would run up Indianapolis road and will provide proper water pressure and go to a 2 million gallon water tower.”
Funds for the project, which will cost around $6.7 million, will come from the State Revolving Fund. Whitestown will only have to pay back $3.2 million total to the SRF throughout the next 20 years.
Austin said the second connection is extremely important for the town.
“A few years ago, a contractor hit the water main with a piece of equipment and drained the tower,” she said. “We lost all pressure. We want to be able to isolate the problem and shut down if we need to. Making sure we have a second connection helps with fire response and fire fighting, and it also improves the pressure for all residents and commercial uses in the area.”
Austin said the council looked at several different rate structures.
