Zionsville officials are studying the town’s animal control ordinance to determine if it needs to be updated.
“It’s something we’re taking a look at with the safety board to see if possible modifications need to be made,” said Zionsville Police Chief Rob Knox. “Discussions are in progress.”
According to Town Manager Ed Mitro, it’s the ZPD’s responsibility to enforce the ordinance, which in many ways, mirrors state statute. For example, the ordinance requires dogs be properly tagged, collared and licensed in accordance with state law; a citation and fine are possible if a dog owner violates this section of the ordinance.
Other sections cover loose dogs, animals soiling public walkways, abandoned animals, barking dogs, dangerous animals and impoundment.
ZPD Capt. Doug Gauthier said officers don’t write many tickets for animal complaints. He said pet owners are usually cooperative when officers give a verbal warning for a barking dog or dog running at large.
According to Knox and Gauthier, ZPD had 184 general animal-related complaints and six dog-bite reports in 2012
“Compared to other communities, I don’t believe we have a lot of issues,” Knox said. “Generally people are very responsible. It’s a very pet-friendly area, but from time to time something goes wrong.”
