A freshman General Assembly member from Zionsville has made creating a better way to fund Indiana schools one of his top priorities.
Rep. Steve Braun (R-Zionsville) said the school funding formula is unfair to good school systems. He said good schools — such as Zionsville Community Schools — are penalized because the formula awards more money to schools with low income students, using the number of children on free and reduced lunches to make funding decisions. He said this would not be a problem if it resulted in a substantial improvement in the performance of those schools that are being subsidized, but said graduation rates and student performance have not improved appreciably.
