Award-winning Times Sentinel columnist Ward Degler has published a book from his weekly column “I was just Thinking,” and will have a book signing from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Black Dog Books, Zionsville.
The book features more than 150 of his columns. Degler’s column appeared in the Times Sentinel for 16 years from 1993 to 2010, and twice was named “Best Columnist” by the Hoosier State Press Association. His wit and wisdom covered a myriad of subjects from daily life, both past and present, from the sublime to the silly.
The book title, “The Dark Ages of My Youth and Times More Recent,” came from the many nostalgic references he made in his writing to growing up in Wisconsin and Missouri during the Great Depression and World War II.
The book also includes columns written about other events in his life including the joys of owning an old sailboat in Key West to the trials and tribulations of dealing with the world’s most headstrong dog.
Degler is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, was a writer and artist for a daily newspaper in Missouri and for the Associated Press. He has lived in the Zionsville area with his wife Jeanne since 1980. He continues to write at warddegler.wordpress.com.
