1928-2008

Yvonne E. Craig, formerly of Zionsville, died April 1, 2008, at the home of her daughter in Sarasota, Fla. She was 79.

Born Oct. 20, 1928, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Harold and Polly Wright. She was raised on a ranch in Coolidge, Ariz., where she developed a love for horseback riding. She was a 1946 graduate of Pike Township High School in Indianapolis.

She married Maynard F. Craig on June 21, 1947; he survives.

She was a homemaker, devoted mother and grandmother. She spent many years as a Girl Scout troop leader in Zionsville and Indianapolis where she was able to pass on her love for horseback riding and camping. She was the director of horseback riding at Camp Dellwood in Indianapolis and Camp Gallahue in Brown County, and put her outdoor experience to use teaching wilderness survival classes and training for natural disasters. She also took an elite troop of scouts trail riding in Colorado for many years. The Hoosier Capital Girl Scout Council awarded her the Highest Achievement in Girl Scouts for her 30 years of dedication and support.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and Zionsville United Methodist Church prior to living in Florida for the past 25 years.

Other survivors include her bother M. Eugene Wright of Indianapolis and her sister Sue Barton of Port Charlotte, Fla.; six children, Nadine Vandergriff of Houston, Texas, Diana Craig of Melbourne, Fla., Sandie Craig Wiegand of Sarasota, Rex Craig of Tipton, Jim Craig of Indianapolis, and Glenn Craig of Zionsville; and 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service at 5 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 5252 W. 52nd St., Indianapolis. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the church.
